Are Meta Tags Dead?

Monday, December 28th, 2009

People say that the use of meta tags are dead, a useless addition to your web site, but are they wrong? Meta tags still serve a useful purpose in every web site. Even though not all search engines utilize these tags they still hold extremely important information about your web site and it’s content.

Not only do meta tags tell a search engine spider about your web site, it also provides instructions telling the spider what you would like it to do and not do.

First let’s look at what meta tags tell us about your web site:

The first tag in your meta tags should be your title tag, in my opinion this is the most important tag you can control. This tag should state your company and no more then 3 key words that pertain to that page. An example of this is

SEO ONE, inc. Search Engine Optimization, Internet Marketing, SEO.

Keyword tag should be the next in line of importance. This tag is fairly straight forward however there are rules on how many keywords you should have. The rule of thumb is around 10 but I recommend no more then 3 keywords. The reason for this is the more keywords you have the more difficult it is to keep the weighted average where it needs to be above 54%. It also becomes difficult to match the keywords in the site to the keyword meta tags. An example of this meta tag is

The 3rd in succession should be your description tag, in this tag we want to describe the web page we are on, and again we have another opportunity to list our 3 key words for this page. This is important do not over look this. It is also critical to keep the order the keywords appear. An example of this tag is

Now we are onto the part of the tags that tell the search engine what you would like for it to do with your web site. These tags are also critical as we can in some cases direct the spider through your web pages.

This tag tells the search engine you would like it to visit your home page, follow all linked pages, and cashes all pages it passes through. This is important because it allows the engine to store your site in it’s data base.

In this tag we tell the spider to come back to our web site every 7 days to search for more content. As a web page changes the content needs to be re indexed in order for it to be relevant. This tag can help us with this point.

There are many more tags, and more detailed information about the tags above, however I only wanted to give a general overview as to the importance of the above tags.

Creating an Effective Online Marketing Campaign

Sunday, December 27th, 2009

There are three things you need to effectively market your website or online business. They are Search Engine Optimization, Search Engine Marketing and a good Analytics Package. Each one will help the other give you your desired results.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

You’ve created a great looking website, you’ve got beautiful graphics and you mom says she’s so proud that you paid attention in that expensive art school she sent you to. A month later you’re not seeing much traffic. You do a search and can’t find yourself in the results. You can’t find yourself anywhere! That is because search engines don’t see your website the same way you do. You will need to tweak you site a little to get the search engines looking and indexing you so you show up close to the top.

Search Engine Marketing (SEM)

Jim, the neighbor, is a venture capitalist or you just happen to have an extra $100 lying around and you want to do some advertising. This is where Search Engine Marketing can help. You could always throw your money into a newspaper ad or put signs up all over town. The problem with that is the police will throw your signs away and the newspaper ad may never reach a single customer that is looking for your product. With Search Engine Marketing you only pay when people come looking for you. My dad is a recruiter. In the old days he would send out hundreds of letters asking people if they know anyone that is looking for a job. It was called head hunting. Today the tables have turned and people come looking for him. This is what has happened with advertising through the miracle of Pay Per Click (PPC).

Analytics

This is what will hold all of your actions accountable for each other. By installing a good analytics package on your website you can see exactly what your customers are doing on it. You can see where they came from, how long they stayed, how many thought your website was lousy and left. With time you will have so much data that you can more effectively administer your SEO and SEM. If you think of the total package as a triangle, the two sides coming down from the top point are your SEO and SEM, analytics is the bottom side holding them up. You need to start at the top, work your way down and with the results you get you can work your way back up.

Of course there is a lot more to this but what I’ve given you here will start you off in the right direction. Nothing happens by chance. If all of this had been around in the 90’s then maybe the dot com boom wouldn’t have burst.

How to Make More Search Engine Visible Websites

Sunday, December 13th, 2009

One day I was desperately searching for one topic in Google. I was not not satisfied with the top page results as the content included in the top search result pages were not enough. So I decided to check the results in the less priority pages. I wondered that some web sites were content rich than I expect. So after that I was thinking why these pages came to low priority and the less relevant pages got high rankings. As a working SEO I decide to analyze each pages on the top ranking and the pages with low search ranking even though they are content full. I didn’t care about the external factors which affecting the result ranks. I just analyzed the on-page factors which determines how much search engine friendly the web page is.

The analysis completed with following results.

1. The pages which optimized are enjoying the high search engine position.

2. The pages which are not optimized are in bottom pages.

What optimization the high rank pages did are not heavy works. They are some simple smart works to ensure that search engines would definitely notice the web page. I am going to tell you some simple steps which any web master can follow.

1. Don’t avoid title tags

Title tags are very important as all search engines will crawl this area for getting an idea about the web page. If the title tag is not relevant to the content of the web page you will not get quality traffic. There is a chance of high bounce rate also present. If a web page has higher bounce rate that the normal rate major search engines will think like you are not providing quality content and that may lead to penalty. So always create relevant title tag with relevant keywords.

2. Don’t waste your time for meta tags

Once upon a time meta tag was very important. All major search engines give attention to the meta tag contents provided in the header. But later many web masters misused the meta tag as they found it is the area they can stuff high traffic keywords to drive traffic. Later Google decides to neglect meta tag as meta tag key words are not relevant to the actual page content. But my advice is not totally neglect meta tag as some search engines still using meta tag. So use a few key words in meta tag and avoid meta tag stuffing.

3. Alt text for images

If your web page is full of images we need to make sure that they have an alt text. In image rich web page search engine will find it difficult to determine what this site is going to tell. Because search engine spiders cannot read images. One more issue is some people still using text only browsers and they cannot see the images. To overcome this limitation we need to add some alt text for images. The alt text should be neat and keyword rich.

4. Ensure that the page contains enough keywords

I stress this part as an important way to get noticed by search engines. If you are creating a content full web page normally there should be enough keywords. But instead of keyword many authors are using short form of keywords to avoid the typing. For a user it is OK as he knows the short form means the keyword but search engine spiders cannot. So use some smart work along with your hard work.

There are many on-page factors which I don’t cover but I ensure you that if you concentrate the points I listed above, that will boost your search engine ranking.

Small Business Loans For Women

Thursday, December 3rd, 2009

Small business loans for women involve a number of procedures. Firstly, they have to submit the loan application that seeks comprehensive information about the project. Specifically, the application form covers aspects like promoter’s background, particulars of the industrial concern, and particulars of the project (capacity, process, technical arrangements, management location, land and buildings, plant and machinery, raw materials, labor and schedule of implementation).

In addition, the loan application form seeks the cost of the project, means of financing, marketing and selling arrangements, profitability and cash flow and economic considerations. When the application is received, an officer of the recipient institution reviews it to ascertain whether it is complete for processing. If it is incomplete the borrower is asked to provide the required additional information. When the application is considered complete, the recipient institution prepares a ‘flash report’ which is essentially a summarization of the loan application, to be evaluated at the Senior Executive Meeting (SEM).

Once the SEM, on the basis of its evaluation of the flash report, decides that the project justifies a detailed appraisal, it nominates the lead financial institution. The factors taken into account for designating the lead institution are location of the project, prior experience of institutions in handling similar projects, and existing workload of the institutions.

The detailed appraisal of the project is done by the lead institution. The appraisal covers the marketing, technical, financial, managerial and economic aspects. The appraisal memorandum is normally prepared within two months after site inspection and placed before the SEM for a decision about approval of the project and determining the sharing arrangement among the institutions. Once a favorable decision is taken at the SEM forum and the sharing arrangement worked out, the case is referred to the Board of Directors of the lead financial institution. After the Board of Directors of the lead financial institution approves the proposal, a financial letter of sanction is issued to the borrower.

How to Set Short-Term Sales and Marketing Objectives That Matter

Wednesday, December 2nd, 2009

Achieving long-term business strategies can only be accomplished by implementing short-term objectives. What are the eight qualities of short-term goals and how can marketing and sales executives use them to get results?

Measurability

Short-term objectives are most effective when they clearly state what is to be accomplished and how achievement will be measured. These objectives can be used to monitor both the effectiveness of each activity and the progress that a business group is making.

Priority-Centric

Prioritizing objectives should happen during the planning stage when executives are negotiating over budget and resources. All annual objectives are important, but some deserve a higher priority due to economic forces that may demand change. There is a substantial risk of long-term (3-5 year) failure if short-term (6-12 month) priorities are not established.

Link to Long-Term Objectives

Short-term objectives help business units gain traction and momentum in the process of accomplishing long-term goals. The link between the long and short term helps employees understand how the work will be done, who will do it, and what is in it for employees as they move closer to the overall objectives of the firm.

Acceptability

Managers will pursue objectives that are consistent with their preferences and their own vision for their business unit. If objectives are deemed to be unfair or if they diminish the role of a manager’s unit, it is likely that the short-term objectives will be ignored or even revolted against.

Flexibility

Objectives should be adaptable to unforeseen changes in the business environment. This can be difficult to do because flexibility comes at the expense of specificity. Flexible objectives can sometimes be seen as too vague.

Motivating

People are most productive when objectives are set at a motivating level – not so high as to frustrate or so low as to be easily attained. Seek out management and employee input to make sure goals are right for different business units.

Understandability

This is pretty self-explanatory. How can someone achieve an objective if he or she cannot even understand it. Keep it simple.

Achievability

Achievability is closely tied to motivation. If an objective cannot be achieved, employees will burn out quickly and move on to a company where they can thrive.

Your ability to set and achieve short-term goals will be directly tied to your long-term success as an executive, manager, or entrepreneur. Making sure you have covered each of the above criterion will enhance your results in the coming months.

SEM – 3 Simple Ways to Make Money

Tuesday, December 1st, 2009

Most people who do search engine marketing are doing it not because they have nothing better to do. They are usually after more exposure, more profits, more leads and more sales. In short, we all want to make more money, right? Here are 3 simple ways to make money with search engine marketing.

Squeeze Pages

You send traffic to a lead capture squeeze page so that you can follow up with them for a long time. This is also known as list building where you build an email list of people who are interested to hear from you again. Just get a percentage of them to buy from you and you will make money.

This can work for you if you have your own product and it can also work for you if you are mainly promoting affiliate programs and getting an affiliate commission in return for your sales. Why not do both? Have your own products as well as promote affiliate programs.

Presell Pages

You can send paid search traffic to a presell page where you promote an affiliate program. On your presell page, you need to show them the benefits of buying so that they will buy. If you can craft a very persuasive message, many people will take up your offer.

Review Pages

You can also send paid search traffic to a review page where you write reviews of a few different products and you allow your visitors to compare them. In this way, you are helping them to make a more informed buying decision. Whichever product they buy, you will still get paid an affiliate commission.
